From dream to reality – The story of Höyry

Saunalaituri Höyry was born out of a love for saunas, open water swimming and community spirit. We wanted to create a place where everyone can stop for a moment, take a deep breath and enjoy the beneficial effects of nature and water.

We noticed that there was a lack of a place near the center of Uusikaupunki where swimming and especially sauna access was easy, flexible and whenever you feel like it. We decided to make our dream come true and build a sauna that offers an experience every day of the year.

The planning of the project began at the end of 2023, and a suitable location was carefully surveyed. The planning of the Pilssitie site started in late 2024, and its location turned out to be ideal – easily accessible by foot, bike, car or in the summer even by boat. In the design, it was important for us to combine functionality and atmosphere: we wanted a sauna with an unobstructed view of the sea and a pier where you could swim effortlessly.

Construction work began in February 2025, and in March 2025 the first sauna users were able to experience the atmosphere of Höyry. The first phase of the project will include changing rooms, toilet facilities, a 15-person electric sauna, a shower for quick rinsing in the sauna room, and a swimming pier. This will form the foundation of the operation and enable a quick start to operations in the middle of winter. As the project progresses, there are plans to expand the operation with a wood heated sauna, shower facilities, and additional changing rooms according to growing demand. In addition, we are investing in creating spaces suitable for relaxation and cooling off.

Janhuanniemi has been part of Uusikaupunki's history for centuries

At the beginning of the 19th century, the area was still an uninhabited, rocky islet, but at the end of the 19th century it became a bustling industrial area. In 1898, a sawmill was established in the area, which utilized the deep sea natural channel to transport raw materials and sawn timber. The sawmill was powered by a steam power plant, which produced electricity for the sawmill and the surrounding area.

Many people also remember Janhuanniemi from the time when it was used by the defense forces. The area, which remained closed for a long time, began to reopen in the 2000s, and in recent decades it has developed into a maritime residential and recreational area.

Now, decades later, it is experiencing a new phase – this time as a place of well-being and relaxation close to nature. Saunalaituri Höyry brings new meaning to the area, combining traditional Finnish sauna culture with the sea and history. Steam is once again bringing energy to the people and visitors of the area, just like a power plant did in its day!

Sauna experiences every day

We want you to be able to enjoy the sauna experience exactly when it suits you best. That's why Höyry is open from morning to evening, almost every day of the year.
