Safety guidelines for winter swimmers
Safety comes first! Make sure you don't go into the ice hole alone — bring a friend along who can help if something happens. Read more in Saunalaituri Höyry's safety guidelines.

1. Swimming and sauna bathing don't mix with alcohol.
2. Don't go into the ice hole alone. Bring a friend, as they can help if something happens.
3. Wait a moment before going from the sauna into the ice hole, and likewise before going from the ice hole into the sauna. Too rapid a temperature change can cause blood pressure fluctuations and dizziness, and puts strain on the heart.
4. Wearing shoes, slippers or wool socks makes ice swimming more comfortable and helps prevent slipping. We also recommend wearing a beanie or sauna hat.
5. Move calmly and carefully, as walkways can be slippery. Slippery surfaces can cause dangerous situations, so be especially careful on stairs and walkways.
6. Don't jump into the ice hole. We don't recommend getting your head wet in cold water, as a lot of heat is lost through the head.
7. For your first few times, it's best to just dip in briefly. As your body adapts to the cold, you can gradually increase your time in the ice hole.
8. Cold water stiffens the muscles, so don't swim too far out. Keep an eye on how your muscles are functioning and make sure you don't swim too far.
9. Dress warmly after ice swimming and sauna bathing, and enjoy a warm drink if needed.
10. Let us know right away if you notice any safety issues with the ice hole or the sauna.
11. Call for help if needed. The general emergency number is 112. The sauna's address is Pilssitie 23, 23500 Uusikaupunki. Follow the instructions given by the emergency response centre.

By following these guidelines, you'll ensure a safe and enjoyable ice swimming experience. Take care of yourself and your friends while ice swimming!
Relaxed sauna etiquette and practices
At Saunalaituri Höyry, we want to guarantee everyone a pleasant and safe sauna experience. Please arrive in good time (about 5 minutes before your session starts) so we can avoid crowding in the changing rooms when sessions change over. The first step is personal hygiene — there's one shower in the steam room for a quick rinse. Please be mindful of the shower's limited capacity so that everyone has a pleasant experience. Using soap or shower products in the shower is not allowed, so let's keep showers quick and light, in the spirit of traditional open water swimming. Wear a swimsuit and bring your own seat cover. In winter, we also recommend a beanie and ice-swimming gloves/socks for your dip.

Remember to step into the sauna quickly and keep the door open only as long as necessary, so the heat and the steam you've just thrown don't escape. Don't block the doorway — others want to enjoy the steam too.

There's room for everyone in the sauna. Find yourself a comfortable spot to sit and respect other people's personal space. Budge up if needed and make room for newcomers to sit. Be considerate of other steam-throwers and ask permission before throwing steam (löyly). It's good practice to take turns throwing steam so that everyone's sauna experience is pleasant. Höyry's sauna is a mixed sauna, so please wear a swimsuit.

The sauna generally has a calm and quiet atmosphere. Everyone should be considerate of other sauna-goers and respect the peace of the sauna. Arguments and work matters are left outside the sauna, as the sauna is a place for relaxation and unwinding. Let the warm steam wash away all of everyday life's worries, quiet your mind for a moment, and enjoy the atmosphere of the sauna.

While sauna bathing, it's good to cool your body in the water or by enjoying the fresh air outside. Remember to stay hydrated, and enjoy your drinks outside the steam room. After sauna bathing and ice swimming, it's important to dress warmly so your body stays warm and you feel comfortable.

By following these easy-going guidelines, you'll help ensure everyone has a pleasant and relaxing sauna experience. Welcome to enjoy wonderful steam and a refreshing dip in the ice hole!
